Positioning Yourself to Receive - Part Three
The Lord's Commission to Heal the Sick

In a previous article we saw that we can trust God to heal us because anyone who ate of the Passover Lamb was healed, everyone who looked at the Brazen Serpent was physically healed, and Jesus showed us the Father's will to heal by the works He did in healing all that were oppressed of the devil.

We can also know that it is God's will to heal all because of the Lord's charge to other people to heal the sick.

1)  Jesus Christ commissioned the twelve disciples to go and heal the sick.

"And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and and all kinds of disease."  (Matthew 10:1)

2)  He also appointed seventy others and sent them out to heal.

"After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.  Then He said to them, "...And heal the sick there, and say to them, "The kingdom of God has come near to you."  (Luke 10:1-2, 9)

3)  Before being received up into heaven, the Lord commissioned believers in Him to go into all the world to preach and heal.

"And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature...And these signs will follow those who believe...they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."  (Mark 16:15, 17-18)

"And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through accompanying signs.  Amen."  (Mark 16:20)

The word "signs" comes from a Greek word which described the official written notice that announced the final verdict of a court.  It also described the signature or seal applied to a document to guarantee its authenticity and a sign that marked key locations in a city.

These signs are the signature of God - the official notice that believers are sent by God and that the gospel message is true.  These signs authenticate the fact that the message is not manmade, but from God.  These signs point unbelievers to the Lord, just like street signs point people in the right direction.

The word "follow" comes from two Greek words, one meaning alongside as to be near or in close proximity; the other meaning to follow or to go somewhere with a person, as to accompany him on a trip.  When joined to form one word, it means to tirelessly accompany someone; to constantly be at the side of an individual; to always be in close proximity with a person, like a faithful companion who is always at one’s side.

These signs are to continually be in step with us and the message we preach - in church, at home, on the job, at the grocery store, etc.  God always intended His word to be confirmed with signs of healing.

"And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people..."  (Acts 5:12)

"And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.  Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed."  (Acts 5:14-16)

Not only did Jesus Christ show us the Father's will to heal by what He did but He commissioned others to go into all the world and heal the sick.  All believers in the Lord Jesus Christ can lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.  Clearly it is God's will to heal all who are physically ill.

In our next article we will examine physical healing in the atonement.
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases."

Psalms 103:2-3
